Thanks, loud music and its perils plus a nightmare to share (Boat No. 7, come in!)

First, thanks so much for all who voted my "heart unbroken" to most popular photo today. One of the most moving pop songs I have heard in recent years is "Unbreak my heart" (Toni Braxton). Here's a link to youtube if you'd like to listen to it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVjTVsjEw6Q (the hyperlink button didn't work). The metaphysics behind the idea is really that once the heart is broken, it cannot be mended. Anyone who has had (and so many of us have) this feeling of being torn apart kno… Continue

What shall I paint?

Saturday evening. It's damp outside, so no mural painting with gouache. I hate the clammy feeling when the air is soaking (though it isn't raining) and gouache paints really need a bit of dryness to speed them along. And of course, the humid atmosphere moistens them, so it's hard to put a new layer on without disturbing what's already there. I've sort of finished the 3+1 challenge I set myself. I'm not happy with it, but it's not too bad and I think I could do a good job of it if I had another b… Continue

Back to the drawing board

After a great vacationin the UK the first thing I did was follow a recommendation by Phil to join "idrawandpaint" with the result that I have neglected us all here quite shamefully! I even missed one of my paintings being featured. Thanks so much, Phil! Starting out in the new group involved uploading some of my work. The result was quite extraordinary. I was literally inundated with comments - all of them nice, some of them embarrassingly flattering, the sort like "where have you been hiding?"… Continue

Now where was I?

Continuing my comment on Olga’s story “In the Net”, I very quickly got onto one of my hobby horses, then decided here's a more suitable place to get het up about something! One lesson to be learnt – and painting has been an eye-witness to what goes on in society every since the first hunters celebrated their hunting victims on cave walls - is how easy it is to jump to conclusions about people's actions and how difficult it is to judge how people feel about something, especially when their situat… Continue

Selling Art

Selling art is a funny thing... How do you put a price on your work, especially when you've put your heart, soul, and inspiration into it and made it a piece of workmanship - whether you, the artist, like it or not! I've seen portraits of animals and aircraft on the web sell for over £2000 pounds, and so with that, I ask, are we not underselling ourselves sometimes? Shouldn't we encourage ourselves to follow in those footsteps? After all, they have the right idea and we don't. And, if we wish… Continue

How (not) to do a painting demonstration

This morning I went to my nearby art materials emporium - a paradise on earth, full of temptations not to be resisted - especially to attend what I thought might be a helpful demonstration on pastel painting on large canvases. The studio used for these events is quite large and purpose-built. It seats about 50 people and there is a large "performance" area, good light and a coffee machine just outside the door. I was late. I'd forgotten to recharge my mobile so waited a few minutes for it to get… Continue

Life's Prayer!

May yours and my life on earth always be filled with self worth. May we all our talents give to this life that we live. May our days be filled with love like that of the mourning dove. And before we go to bed may we all our day's woes shed. In our mind may we be wise And see with other than our eyes. And our nights never know fright, because we always sleep tight. May we awaken each morn never feeling forlorn. And may we in our hearts keep a feeling of peace so deep. And always hold our head hig… Continue

Never on a Sunday.....

(this is a repeat of my journal entry for June 1st at RB) Never on a Sunday? ............................Well, not every Sunday. I have never kept a diary. I wish I had. When I was about 13, I started having singing lessons with a new teacher. I remember quite clearly sitting on the train after the first lesson. The journey took 50 minutes one way and I vowed that I would start writing about those lessons, which were an inspiration to me as a young girl with very strong ambitions to go on the s… Continue
